Was motion gaming a good idea?

Way back in 2006 when the Wii was released, people were both excited and skeptical of the new motion controls. When it was released, people picked up the controllers and either loved, or hated them. Some hated the idea of waving arms around to perform simple controls which were assigned to buttons on the other systems. I didn't like them much either... at first. Wii Sports was cool, but it was not aimed at hardcore gamers. Then came the good ones:
Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
Goldeneye Wii
New Super Mario Bros Wii
Donkey Kong Country Returns
Pikmin Remakes

And those are the games which (in my opinion) motion makes better. Who loved the motion in Twilight Princess? Or the new motion controls or mini-games in Mario Galaxy or Bros Wii? And don't forget the precise aiming in the first person shooters. But there are even more games that abused the motion simply because it was there. I hate those games. In fact, I think the fact that Nintendo's hook for the Wii was motion brought in a lot of terrible motion control abusers. WAGGLE!!

Motion gaming for me has its on's and off's. On one hand, the games listed above are so much better with motion than they could have ever been without. But there is a long list of terrible motion games. I think that when Nintendo makes more games, they should use motion only when required. Use it for FPS games, or for more games like the ones above, but be careful with how it is used in a control scheme.

Trailer!

Just watch and "Marvel" at the trailer for Spider-Man Edge of Time. (Note: This will be my last post about the Edge of Time until the release...or something super interesting pops up) Enjoy!

The 3DS: Gimmick or Revolution

I know I'm supposed to be away for a bit, but the 3DS has been released and I just couldn't resist!

You see, the DS is probably the best handheld console ever invented (In my opinion) but at last, its successor has arrived. The new console is sporting 3D that doesn't need glasses. That's right, no glasses. But if you don't want to see the 3D, just flick the switch off and boom, 2D.

3D gaming? Do you really want it, and on a small screen? Sure, I can see potential in it, I can see some people who would love it. I can see people who would hate it.

The new system has some cool looking games coming out for it, Mario Kart, Zelda, Metal Gears Solid, Ocarina, Street Fighter, Prof Layton, Lylat Wars, so it looks like it's worth a shot.

What do you think?

Sorry guys

Sorry everyone, but I really don't have that much time for blogging at the moment. Or gaming for that matter. Don't worry though, I'll be ready again at the end of next week. But keep checking for Terfle's posts. 4EVER will be back.

Epic Mickey

A game that I got a while ago is Epic Mickey. This game is quite a step in a new direction for Disney. It is a bit undeniable that Disney has a talent for buying things and then ruining them(Jelly Car). This doesn't happen for everything (Kingdom Hearts) but Disney tends to be obsessed with happy endings and dull story lines. That is why I like how they have stepped away from their usual ways for this game. Basically Mickey accidentally created a monster called the Phantom Blot who then destroyed a world called wasteland and then dragged Mickey inside. As Mickey was getting dragged in he tried to grab on to something to stop him, but all he grabbed was an enchanted paint brush. With this paint brush mickey can erase objects and create them. In the game play there is almost always two ways to solve every puzzle, one where you erase things and one where you create things, generally people will choose one and stick with it, because if you do you get things called guardians which help you greatly. The characters in the game also judge you on several things like if you will go out of your way to help people and do quests that are difficult when they are not mandatory. The way that you do quests and solve puzzles will change the way people treat you, it also changes what you can do later on in the game. I liked the occasional 2d side scrolling levels as it was a nice way to break up the game play, and I also like the character Oswald. Oswald is pretty much Mickey, but cool (like with Roxas and Sora). The thing that I thought was really awesome though was that this whole game was Disney going through their history. Oswald was meant to be Mickey, he was going to be Disney's mascot but they changed it to Mickey. Also the mad professor is from one of the early Disney cartoons (they let you watch a few of them). And last but not least, the entirety of wasteland is actually a warped and twisted version of Disneyland (I was like 'mind blown') this is never discussed in the game but if you think about it...

Super Scribblenauts

Super Scribblenauts just barely claims the title as my favourite nintendo DS game. It is a down right impressive game. The concept alone of being able to write in any nouns or adjectives is just plain awesome. It is the kind of game that you can get anybody, even people who hate video games to have fun with. The game has no real storyline, aside from the fact that the character is called Maxwell, but hey thats basically as much as Mario does. Super Scribblenauts focuses much more on the gameplay, this doesn't really make the game any worse it just leaves you to do what ever you want. You can make golden pregnant T-rexs fight telekinetic flying donkeys, well if you want to. What I like so much about it is the way that really the sky is the limit, well the sky and your vocabulary. Having a slightly smaller vocabulary wont make the game worse it just means that you will play it very differently. The game includes a sandbox mode, 121 levels and even the option of creating your own levels. Another thing that is great about this game is that every problem from the first game is fixed, in the first game the controls weren't great and it did glitch a little bit, but everything is better for this game. It has some crazy, and awesome levels and even a final one with a storyline. Another cool thing is the Easter eggs in the game. There are some weird one like ''lol wut'' which gives you a hat that is basically maxwells head but huge, another is the adjective scribblenautical, which im not even going to tell you what it does. You can also type in the names of the devs to get some really weird things, some of the devs just wanted their character to look like them, but some of them have... unusual avatars. One is a light blue slime, and another is a T-rex with a red bandanna, there is event one that is a really short samurai holding a massive sword. There are some things that i found that you could type in that have awesome results, like the 'robosaur' a mechanical T-rex. The 'Shoggoth' a huge blue monster covered in eyes. There is the adjective omnipotent which makes whatever it is applied to immortal, slightly larger and gives them the ability to fly. The adjective 'telekinetic' makes things around the object float. And of coarse the unusual adjective 'pregnant' which makes the object have a baby version of itself after a few seconds. Anyway I thought that this game was great because you could do what ever you wanted, even if you wanted to fight your evil clone with excalibur or ride a flying T-rex into the sunset.
Maxwell's mount of choice, the flying spotty bathtub.

Does the Wii need a successor?

The Nintendo Wii has been on the market for about five years now and thar's old! Really old for a console at any rate. But the Wii has done incredibly well in its lifespan, selling gigantic amounts of games. Think about this. One of the best selling Xbox 360 games of all time was Halo 3, selling at roughly 8 million units. Mario Kart Wii is the third best selling Wii game, selling at about 26 million units. Now that's quite a considerable margin. So, the Wii's doing well, but what's on the horizon? Apart from The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword, has there been all that much buzz about upcoming Wii games? I know, I know, the 3DS is about to be released and that means Nintendo might be putting some projects on hold for the time being. But still, there are some problems which the system has which could all be fixed with a new installment.

1.) Graphics: Updating the graphics to HD would be nice.
2.) Controller: I have absolutely nothing against the Wii-motes, in fact, I like them much better than the other ones on the market, but it would be nice to see another control stick added to the mix.
3.) Image: What I mean is, in the eyes of PS3 and 360 gamers, they think the Wii is garbage because you waggle your arms about at 1000000 kilometers per hour to play games that aren't COD or Halo. They're wrong. But an image update could make these trash talkers throw their controllers in the recycle and dive into the new system.

But personally, I don't think the Wii needs a successor yet...soon, but not yet. Nintendo tend to release a new console every five years, so I wouldn't be too surprised if one was announced, but nothing official has been confirmed. But I would like to see the Wii on the market for at lest 1 more year. :-)
